ABSTRACT

This chapter addresses challenges and solutions for improving enterprise risk management (ERM) practice, using the ERM program and the criteria for ERM maturity. It discusses troubleshooting and diagnosis of common issues and challenges that exist in forming, maintaining and improving ERM practices in an organization. The chapter examines potential challenges involved with risk resources, particularly when organizations are faced with limited financial or human resources. It describes methods for troubleshooting issues that may exist within ERM and within ERM programs in particular. Applying the troubleshooting approaches and methods, insights are gained on challenges and problems related to the development, implementation and improvement of the ERM and ERM programs. Analysts and ERM managers may encounter resistance to risk management activities that are supported by a well-functioning ERM process. This type of resistance may be due to policies in place in other facets of the organization, or bureaucracies that are common in large private organizations and also the public sector.
