ABSTRACT

Chapter 3 examines the political makeup of conservative Protestant colleges and universities in comparison to other institutions of higher education. Previous research has established that the political makeup of faculty members is overwhelmingly progressive. But we are not sure about the political makeup of faculty in conservative Protestant colleges and universities. Data on the political contributions of campus personnel and a survey on the political attitudes of professors confirms the powerful politically progressive attitudes of college and university faculty. However that data also shows propensity toward slight progressive political attitude among faculty at conservative Protestant campuses. The one exception to this trend is that such faculty are appreciably more conservative on social issues (abortion, homosexuality) than faculty members at other campuses. If conservative Protestant institutions of higher education are biased toward political conservatism then they do so in spite of not being overwhelming conservative.
