ABSTRACT

Chapter 6 introduces three case studies of conservative Protestant universities. Those universities are Liberty University, Wheaton College, and Bethel University. We find elements of our model within these three institutions. For example, while Liberty University is more politically conservative than most other conservative Protestant institutions of higher education, it has also shown a political openness in presentation of speakers. Furthermore the conservativism in Liberty is driven more by social conservatism than economic or foreign policy issues. Wheaton College is a well-known evangelical school that recently underwent a controversy over a political science professor Larycia Hawkins. It is of note that Hawkins lost her job due to theological, and not political disagreements. There is evidence that political progressive ideology is common on campus but faculty are still expected to conform to theological expectations. Finally, Bethel University shows an interesting blend of minor progressive ideology mixed with strong theological boundaries. All three of these institutions will help us to show how conservative Protestant schools politically express themselves.
