ABSTRACT

The main properties of Eugenia uniflora are antiseptic and astringent. Surinam berries reduce inflammation and enhance the functioning of the lungs. Eugenia uniflora can be used both as food and also as folk medicine. Secondary metabolites like tannins, flavonoids, and terpenoids are present in the plant. Brazilians use the juice of this plant to ferment into wine or vinegar and in some cases to prepare distilled liquor. Seeds of Eugenia cannot be eaten. Eugenia uniflora, which is endemic to Brazil, also can be found in special or dissimilar vegetation types and ecosystems.
