ABSTRACT

In February 1947 the Harold Fielding agency had written to the Australian Broadcasting Commission wondering if Australia would be interested in a tour by Alfredo Campoli, pointing out that various people were approaching the violinist about the possibility of tours overseas. The tour, took in both Australia and New Zealand, and on 17 March 1950 Joy and Alfredo boarded the Oreades to take them on what was to be the first of a number of visits to both countries over the next quarter of a century. Both in Australia and New Zealand Alfredo's tour excited much press comment, with interviews, anecdotes and photographs, more usual today with pop stars than classical artists. Archibald Joyce and Campoli Alfredo disembarked from the Oreades at Adelaide, travelling overland by train to where Alfredo would make his Australian debut Melbourne, capital city of the State of Victoria, which they reached on 12 April.
