ABSTRACT

‘Biological diversity’ and shortly biodiversity, was first used by Raymond F. Dasmann, a wildlife scientist and conservationist in 1968 in his book titled A Different Kind of Country advocating conservation. The eastern part of Bangladesh biogeographically falls in the IndoBurma part that’s one of the 25 known biodiversity hotspot regions of the world and thought to have 7,000 endemic plant species. In a nutshell, Bangladesh, although occupies quite small geographical vicinity, is wealthy in both floral and faunal diversities obtrusive in a numerous variety of ecosystems beginning from the northern and eastern hills to the southern seas. The Encyclopedia of Flora and Fauna of Bangladesh included 3611, 195 and 7 species of angiosperms, pteridophytes, and gymnosperms, respectively. Inventory and documentation of the Flora of Bangladesh were initiated in May 1970 when a project was approved by the Government entitled “Botanical Survey of Bangladesh” under the Agricultural Research Council of Bangladesh.
