ABSTRACT
Older adults are diverse in demographic characteristics, educational levels, disability status, living situation, and community surroundings. Such diversity creates challenges for technology design intended to empower them, engage them in society, and enhance their quality of life. The goal of this chapter is to provide a general overview of older adults’ needs, capabilities, limitations, and preferences in the context of technology design. In the process, we highlight the importance of inclusion, mattering, and social justice. Case study examples illustrate how different research methods can be utilized to ensure inclusion of older adults in the design process. Research gaps are identified to guide future efforts.
