ABSTRACT

Chapter 4 begins with reasons for focusing on competent people, then discusses a competency model for helping to select competent system engineers. The chapter continues by describing a number of conceptual and physical tools that should be in your systems engineer’s toolbox including the requirements traceability matrix (RTM), the CONOPS, the systems engineering management plan (SEMP), the requirements document, the test and evaluation master plan (TEMP), interface control documents, the Shmemp, a standard functional template for a system, and the seven principles for systems engineered solution systems. The chapter also lists a few more tools discussed in other chapters of the book and references even more for suggested additional reading. The chapter also introduced a figure of merit for measuring the quality of a requirements document.
