ABSTRACT

Cold hibernated elastic memory (CHEM) technology was created as a result of the quest for simple, reliable, and low-cost space deployable/expandable structures. This structure technology provides NASA a robust, innovative, ultra-light self-deployable structure with significantly higher reliability, lower cost, and simplicity over other expandable/deployable structures to be used in many future space missions of the Earth and Space Science Programs. Currently, the CHEM technology concept is well-formulated with clear space uses. Previous experimental results were very encouraging; the accumulated data indicate that the CHEM foam concept performs robustly in the Earth environment as well as in space.
