ABSTRACT

Over the past half-century, a new design culture has emerged; a culture that symbolizes itself in many variations and materials. Creative possibilities of the material’s extended properties were reforming the object, from its look to added functions, from production methods to rethinking the organization of distribution, from reshaping the lifestyle to the user’s experience. This chapter focuses on the functions of objects by the use of smart materials with an extra function for personalization. The sedated society has produced variety in all kind of sitting possibilities, from aesthetically pleasing to the performance of specific physical tasks of body. Humans need variants, not only for aesthetical reasons or the newness of shapes, but simply because human bodies in a sitting position, even the most comfortable positions, want and need to move in different positions. The shells of diatoms belong to the first products of organisms whose microstructure consists of a detailed layering with an infinite number of variation.
