ABSTRACT

Lean Six Sigma is a methodology used to make things better, faster or more cost effective. It combines the best ideas captured in Six Sigma methodology and Lean thinking. There are several models used in Six Sigma, but the Define-Measure-Analyze-Improve-Control (DMAIC) model is the most popular. This chapter discusses main activities in each phase of the model. They are Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve, and Control phase. The idea behind the control plan, which can also be a major deliverable, is that the control plan is written in a way that even those not exposed to Lean Six Sigma can review and understand it. Some smaller process improvements can benefit from simply thinking through the various phases of the model. Critical-to-Quality factors are relevant throughout the DMAIC model. The DMAIC model is a structure that can successfully identify a process improvement, provide solutions and sustain the improvement.
