ABSTRACT

In the Analyze phase of the Define-Measure-Analyze-Improve-Control (DMAIC) model, this chapter explores the root cause of the current condition along with correlation, impact and variation. The Analyze phase is where most traditional Lean Six Sigma and Six Sigma classes spend their time in instructing the student. Analyze (the third phase of the DMAIC model) is where the information from the Measure phase is evaluated. The Cause & effect diagram is used to explore all the potential or real causes that result in a single effect. Root Causes, Correlation, and Impact conditions are reviewed and analyzed for the purpose of coming up with 3–5 solutions. Brainstorming can help positively identify causes of problems, rank ideas in a meaningful order, select important ideas or check solutions. The true purpose of the Analyze phase is to form the logical foundation for the 3–5 solutions.
