ABSTRACT

Ethnobotany is an autonomous field of study that draws from various disciplines such as botany, medicine, pharmacy, archeology, ecology, economics, sociology, and cultural and religious studies. It provides indigenous knowledge about useful plants, peoples’ culture, and interaction with their environment. In modern science, ethnobotanical studies form the basis of drug research and give the researcher guide to possible biological activities of a plant and how best these can be harnessed in the preparation and administration of plant-based drugs. In this chapter, the authors highlighted the significance of an ethnobotanical study of indigenous medicinal plants, the step-by-step procedures to conducting an ethnobotanical survey, and documented the medicinal plants and traditional medicine practices of the indigenous people of Nsukka, Southeast Nigeria.
