ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the author highlights that Gender-neutral or gender-inclusive pronouns like they/them/their don’t refer to one particular gender. She has learned that this is very important to people who identify with multiple genders, or even no gender at all. In the spirit of fostering warmth, connection, and community in our Sexualities, Gender, and Schooling course, the students and the author usually start off every class with a name and pronoun check. Each student reminds the group of their name and what pronoun they use. The name and pronoun check is also useful for introducing the members of the class to guest speakers, who then also have an opportunity to let them know what pronouns they use. During their name and pronoun check, some of the students will tell the class what pronoun they “prefer”; for example, “I prefer she/her.”.
