ABSTRACT

In several research projects, for fillet weld connections with same base metal on both sides a design resistance function modified for high strength steel was developed by Rasche [5]. In the frame of additional research projects [13], [14] the applicability of this modified design resistance function had been confirmed for mixed connections with fillet welds with base metal of normal and high strength steels. The results of this research on a design model for the determination of the load carrying capacity of welded connections made of high strength steel has been presented as an amendment to the European code committee SC3 and is meanwhile accepted for incorporation in the future version of prEN 1993-1-8 [7]. For butt welds of high strength steel a failure may occur in the weld or in the heat affected zone, though the verification is usually done at the member section. Therefore, an adapted design model for butt welds with high strength steel is also planned to be developed.
