ABSTRACT

The pressure load caused by wind is often the primary form of lateral loading on structures in South Africa, it therefore has a significant impact on the structural layout of buildings. This load is modelled using SANS 10160-3 as a guide. The wind environment is reflected in this code based on data collected by the South African Weather Service. The wind speed data which forms the basis of this code was last updated 10 years ago. Since then the amount of available data has doubled with significantly improved spatial resolution and series lengths. This data was quality controlled and classified by cause and standardised by correcting for site exposure. This was done to make the data more representatitive of the macro wind climate. Series length was further increased by correcting the instrumentation error of pre 1990 data.
