ABSTRACT

A consequence of focusing on equality is that it concentrates attention on the extent to which responding to ethnic diversity has implications for a school as a whole. Attention has turned to achieving equality in a multi-ethnic society. The need to develop policies is being recognized in a growing number of multi-racial schools. But in a multi-ethnic society committed to equality the issues being discussed by these teachers are of relevance to all schools. Racism does not manifest itself simply in direct discriminatory acts between white and black people, it is endemic in the attitudes which pervade society. A pluralist approach, involves schools responding positively to the fact that society as a whole comprises a range of different ethnic and cultural groups. Linguistic diversity has always been a phenomenon in schools. The chapter also presents an overview on the key concepts discussed in this book.
