ABSTRACT

In this chapter we are going to explore in some detail the views and behaviour of a number of white children. The first four, David, Robert, Adam and Jacky, reveal something of the interplay between elements of racist ideologies circulating in society and the ways in which they are taken up within children’s cultures, and in particular how they are put to work in social interaction. The remaining ones, those of Gemma and Tina, Jane, Karen and Charlotte, illustrate the understanding that some white children of 10 and 11 years of age have of racism, and their commitment to racial equality.
