ABSTRACT

Far from being a figment of the people imaginations, the total destruction of the enemy is now possible; a thorny problem, however, is that it risks the total annihilation not only of the conquered but of the conquerors. It is crucial to halt the arms race and move back the clock or the planet itself will bear the costs of a confrontation between world powers. Historically, violence has always been the instrument of domination par excellence, and it is this which must be abolished if the people intend to eradicate the risk of generalized armed confrontation. For their part, feminists cannot ignore the dangers posed by militarism, nor be satisfied with a mitigated form of pacifism which pretends to reduce the panoply of weapons which are lethal in any number. Pacifism, defined as the practice of non-violence, would mean active intervention to change the world, opening an immense field of activity which is not utopian.
