ABSTRACT

In the south end of The Triangle residents said they felt safer here than anywhere else in the ward. People here felt that the community had been able to take control of some of its problems and as a consequence expressed levels of fear of crime were much lower than elsewhere in the ward. Relationships between the police and the local community in the old City of Salford have always been somewhat fragile and tentative. Oldtown breaks down info smaller localities in which perceptions and views of community were differently expressed. For example, in two of the localities in the south of the ward more people said that their area had a community feel than in two areas in the north of the ward. In Oldtown over half the people interviewed cited the following as problems; vandalism, crime, young people hanging about and unemployment.
