ABSTRACT

This chapter outlines the first steps in knowledge elicitation in a multi environmental system in insurance. Knowledge engineering should be concerned with the construction of knowledge-based systems that would be capable of operating correctly and efficiently in a multi-environmental situation. The chapter is concerned with the application of new knowledge elicitation methodology to the domain of insurance underwriting. Insurance underwriting, which is similar to clinical decision making, is concerned with making decisions under risk conditions and uncertainty. There are many important contexts in insurance, which span marine insurance with its liabilities for the ship and cargo, damage to third parties and other ships and for other problems such as oil pollution. As many important insurance contracts with high risks are concerned with worldwide business, transport and communication systems, it can be clearly seen that the multi-environmental approach based on Activity Structures is indispensible in this knowledge domain.
