ABSTRACT

This chapter turns the focus to mainstreamed economic news as a provider of cues and mental shortcuts as we explore the role of economic news in economic voting. The domestication of economic news is central. Media make global developments relevant to domestic audiences by connecting the coverage to national actors and discussing the impact on home audiences. Such domesticated coverage makes people associate the economy with national (political) actors. In particular, people with low interest in economic news—the inattentive audience—are affected by this kind of news.
