ABSTRACT

This chapter analyzes the condition of the urbanisation of Asia, with the background and the awareness of the issues and then to clarify the problems of Asian city planning. It reviews the development stages of Asian economies and analyze the urbanisation of Asia from the aspects of population, industry, improvement level of urban facilities, urban life, education level, land use, and the diffusion of consumer durables. The chapter describes the present condition and problem of the urbanisation of Japan, which is one step ahead in Asia, in order to find out the concepts that are helpful in guiding the urbanisation of Asia. It explores the methods of field investigation, statistical collection and literature review from the standpoint of city planners. The techniques of city planning have been developed since the 19th century and through the early decades of the 20th century mainly in West Europe and North America.
