ABSTRACT

The Ganga river basin, together with the lower Brahmaputra in Assam and Bengal, constitutes one of the most remarkable natural resource units on earth. The National Institute of Urban Affairs provides some figures and maps for four cities – Delhi, in the Ganga basin, and three cities outside – Mumbai, Vadodara and Ahmedabad. The natural increase of both urban and rural areas is projected using the same growth rate as for the state, but then the urban growth is augmented by a migration component subtracted from the rural area, which is calculated as a specific multiple of the natural urban increase. The water supply situation at the level of the individual household or enterprise in both urban and rural areas is not well known. The connection for sewage is similarly unequal: only one third of households in urban areas nationally are connected to a closed water sewer.
