ABSTRACT

This chapter explores what it means to work beyond technique, to embrace the system of the client’s full experience instead. The concept is explored of creating a three-dimensional model of the client’s process, matching this and providing stretch. There is an exploration of a chemistry session, together with its value and complexity. The coach describes what it means to provoke a ‘comfortable, uncomfortableness’ by highlighting the permission to give feedback, and the consequences of not making it safe to do so. A case study illustrates the challenges of a resistant client who does not embrace the development points on which the superiors felt the client needed to work – a distortion of psychological distance.
