ABSTRACT

This chapter examines purpose, connection and finding meaning in coaching. A description is given of a systemic coaching assignment of significant volume: 3,500 hours practice in one context. An example is also given of the impact of straying from one’s core purpose and the consequential loss of direction and lack of confidence. The chapter provides a powerful recounting of the significance of endings in coaching, with a focus on the compassion required by the coach to hold the client while potential ‘good’ and ‘bad’ endings are explored. A powerful case study is also provided of what happens when the contract has not been put in place to enable the coach to be authentic: the consequences for all of the coach masking what is really happening and the challenge of not being able to share observations with a group.
