ABSTRACT

Immersion and dual language (ImDL) teachers need to be adept at designing instruction that integrates subject-matter content and the language needed to engage with that content. To this end, Chapter 7 introduces a template for unit-level instructional design and walks readers through the process of developing thematically based curriculum unit plans that build on students’ background knowledge and skills; are linked to state or provincial standards or outcomes; integrate content, language, and culture; and identify end-of-unit summative performance assessment tasks. The chapter describes how units are comprised of modules, which are, in turn, comprised of daily lessons. The template draws on several tenets of “backward design,” a well-known results-based approach to instructional design. The unit-level instructional design process is exemplified with a detailed example available in the Appendices.
