ABSTRACT

Chapter 9 describes biliteracy as a system of bilingual learning that includes oracy, reading, writing, and metalinguistic development, all interacting in an integrated way across two languages. The chapter explains the key role of biliteracy development in immersion and dual language (ImDL) programs and illustrates through concrete examples how ImDL teachers can scaffold its development. The chapter focuses specifically on bilingual read-aloud projects as a meaningful approach to forge cross-linguistic connections while maintaining separate spaces for instruction in each program language. Partner teacher collaboration is presented as the ideal way of implementing such an approach with a view to creating greater coherence across the ImDL curriculum.
