ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study is to explore how cultural management is carried out on indigenous peoples through the education process. The indigenous people in this case are the Indigenous Peoples of the Tengger Bromo Tribe, Pasuruan Regency, East Java. The indigenous people of the Tengger tribe have a peculiarity in the process of harmonizing their communities. This study is a qualitative research with case study approach. Data collection techniques used are interviews and literature studies. Source triangulation is carried out to improve data validity. Data analysis was performed using flow model of analysis, including the stages of data collection, data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. Data from the results of this study were analyzed with a functional-structural approach. The results showed that education plays an important role in the process of transmitting culture, education is meant for not only formal education in schools but also non-formal education in communities in places of worship such as temples, mosques, and churches. To maintain the continuity of customs in the era of globalization, the education process becomes a “bridge” in the difference between the new and the old, or between the traditional and the modern. In the indigenous people of Tengger tribe, the management of culture in addition to the education process is done by cultural leaders, namely dukun.
