ABSTRACT

Woman position on Indonesian domestic migrant workers has been subordinated and deconstructed, either through culture or social forms at society nowadays. The differences of gender and sexes are intended by patriarchies of the hegemony existence. Women’s self-resistance became necessary due to difference and inequality of gender in society. That phenomenon causes women in doing counter hegemony as struggling from reconstructing their position for justice of gender and concreted by having migration from Eat Java province, Indonesia to Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Singapore. The purpose of this research was to analyze and describe Indonesian domestic migrant worker negotiation and resistance at Hong Kong using Gramsci hegemony theory. Using qualitative perspective, research was done by an in-depth interview of 12 Indonesian women on several regencies (equal to cities) at East Java Province who worked as domestic workers for least 4 years. Research process was based primarily on non-random sampling using snowball system. Conclusion of this research is that subordinate position of women has an opportunity when Indonesian women are able to utilize their self-potentials and insights for pursuing their career. Indonesian women could reconstruct their position when they have strong bargaining position toward patriarchy domination, and fight the culture by migrating as domestic workers to several countries. Indonesian women resilience appears from patriarchies hegemony which verifies counter hegemony by constructed domestic workers at East Java Province as potential occupation for another Indonesian with their social network.
