Stayed in London three days ‘in which time I provided myself the needful apparatus, principally o f Jones. .. .My subscription has gone on with wonderful rapidity [probably to his Manchester lectures]; there are probably nearly 80 on the list, and may be many more before I can be ready’ LP typescript (see below) 16 7.28 Dalton, Jonathan, Kendal Manchester, 30 Oct. 1817 Describes an assault in Manchester when his pocket-book was stolen. Reports that his ‘highly valued friend, Peter Ewart,’ was involved in a very serious accident near Blackburn, as the result o f a post chaise overturning. Visited by M. Biot on his way back from the Shedand Isles. Asks if he had mentioned that the French Academy o f Sciences had recendy elected him a corresponding member. Has received an invitation from the Birmingham Philosophical Society to give a short course of lectures for 80 guineas. ‘I have got at least 160 pages o f my second volume o f chemistry printed.’ (see 9) LP typescript The four letters listed immediately above were presented to the Society in 1922 by Colonel Allen o f Castle Combe, Chippenham, who believed that they had been purchased at an auction sale. They joined the Society’s collection o f letters between the brothers dating from 1793 to 1824. A ll the letters were destroyed in 1940. Henry in his biography 480 gives extracts from three o f the letters and there were quotations in an article in the Manchester City News, 18 November 1922. This seemed to be all that survived until, in 1995, what appears to be a complete transcription o f the four letters was found in an old file, typed on eight sheets o f Lit. and Phil, headed paper o f the 1920s. The letters are included in Memoirs, 1993-4, 132, 169-76
