435 Allen, Joseph O il on canvas (quarter size). Date unknown. 70 x 58 cms. It is not known if this portrait is by Allen or merely a copy. There are slight differences from the larger portrait. The right hand is thrust into the waistcoat and the colour o f the coat is brown and not dark grey. Presented by Thomas Agnew to Salford City Art Gallery, 1868 U M IST

Accordingly, the Post Office was then reminded o f the importance o f the approaching Dalton bicentenary in 1966 but, although the stamp was designed by an eminent artist, the subject appears not to have been considered appropriate enough to have come ‘within licking distance o f an envelope’ 448 Gilbert, Sir John and Skill, J.F .
