ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the author aims to manifest and perform a method which would be transnational on all levels, “all the way down” as the saying goes, in terms of the transnational affiliations of the scholars and directors referenced, in terms of the transnational nature of the films, movements. A transformative approach to what is variously called World Literature, World Cinema, Global media, Transnational Cinema, and so forth, could benefit from being thought through from a flexible method pithily summarized by a series of “trans” concepts that bring the advantage of implying movement and transition from one state to another. In Bakhtinian language, each art, medium, and disciplines offer is own “exotopy” or critical distance, its own “excess seeing,” hopefully coming not only to see the “other medium” or discipline’s point of view, but also, through a salutary estrangement, to see how it is itself seen by others.
