ABSTRACT

The concept of sustainability has traditionally been applied to either global or regional contexts. Only recently has it also become associated with more specific localities and, in particular, within existing built-up areas. This paper argues for a further local application; the redevelopment pressures in an area of extraordinary scenic beauty and, therefore, strong tourism demand. Lake Iseo in Italy is chosen as a prototype example to argue the case for sensitively balanced sustainable development that takes account of pressures for re-development but also preserves and enhances the physical attractiveness of the locality.
