ABSTRACT

Tourism is an essential pillar of the Mauritian economy with annual tourist arrivals of around two million since 2015. The current chapter assesses the role played by the law in the relative success of tourism in Mauritius. An in-depth review of legislation regarding tourism is carried out, with particular focus on strategic directions taken by the state towards Mauritius. The various mechanisms and institutions in place are also highlighted in view of accentuating their positive impact on tourism growth in Mauritius. Other related aspects such as the environment and safety and their related legal frameworks are also considered. In addition, the normative relationship of the state of Mauritius is assessed, in relation to the international legal obligations it carries through international conventions and treaties under the aegis of the United Nations and the African Union.
