ABSTRACT

Chapter 2 commences with a discussion on the origin of Mandinka dance movements, and exposes readers to the first documentation of dance witnessed on millennia-old African rock art. It emphasizes the form including root and auxiliary steps, the significance of Mandinka dance movements, and the cultural systems they exist in. Details concerning the dance systems’ auxiliary items, such as the distinction between dance attire and costumes, materials they are constructed from, and the props that accompany them. Chapter 2 also discusses the instruments used in Mandinka dance systems. Ultimately, Chapter 2 addresses how the dances are practiced and perceived by dancers, dance musicians, spectators, and society at large.
