ABSTRACT

Sustainable development foresees that socio-economic development co-exists with environmental protection. This presents a learning challenge for biosphere reserves (BRs) designated under the Man and Biosphere Programme. BR organizations must consider how to meet conservation objectives as well as local development objectives when drafting the nomination form. To that end, different types of knowledge and information about socio-economic and natural processes are used. This knowledge comes from studies undertaken by many different actors, including governmental agencies, academia, as well as associations and civil society. Yet, the details of when and how different knowledge is used to balance diverse interests related to conservation and development has not been explored to date. In this study, we address this issue by focusing on knowledge used in nominations of Swedish BRs.
