ABSTRACT
The conservation and protection of buildings that constitute our cultural heritage is a complex task calling for a comprehensive knowledge of the historical background of the objects as well as the construction technologies and materials used. One major handicap, however, is that lime suspensions have only a limited penetration capacity. The use of lime water, or more precisely a saturated solution of calcium hydroxide in water, has no or only an extremely low consolidation capacity. One alternative is the use of nanolime dispersions. These are colloidal systems containing nano calcium hydroxide particles in different alcohols. The main issues are the formation of white haze as well as the penetration depth. Another aspect that has only been touched upon as yet concerns the combination of nanolime with traditional conservation agents such as different types of silicic acid esters.
