ABSTRACT

The authors of this chapter are drawn from various points in their careers, from undergraduate level through to Consultant Clinical Psychologists, including personal experiences of accessing mental health service as well. As clinical psychology has developed as a profession, we have become increasingly conscious of the limitations of direct therapy in meeting the mental health needs of our communities. Whilst community psychology has taken a much more ‘connected’ approach for a long time, clinical psychology is relatively new to community working. This chapter is built around the ‘stories’ of the authors, and whilst it is light on academic references, it will be largely structured around the work of the many inspiring thinkers who have influenced the world of critical and community psychology.
