ABSTRACT

The term dysarthria literally means disorder of articulation; the term has been reserved for defective articulation due to organic causes. Methods of treatment, while varying to some degree, fall into two main categories: specific exercises for the movements of the lip, tongue, palate and jaw, together with breathing exercises, and the motor-kinaesthetic method. In cases of upper motor neurone disorder, however, an attempt to train or retrain the musculature by specific exercises would appear to be an unwise and rather fruitless procedure. Muscle tone should be steady and of moderate intensity if performance is to be smooth and precise.” This form of treatment brought about a close link between speech therapy and physiotherapy. The distribution of energy throughout the whole speech mechanism is described as inter-related with the workings of the brain and the development of those organs directly concerned with speech.
