ABSTRACT

The teacher’s first task is to attract the children’s attention so that they will listen and respond to speech. The children have to be taught how to ask for goods – at first they are likely to hand the money to the shopkeeper without realizing that words are needed. The speech therapist’s approach to formal preparation for reading takes various forms which may not be used by the class teacher. The twin who had special help with his speech greatly surpassed his brother in language development, using grammatically constructed and extended sentences at an earlier stage. He became the more active in planning a project and showed initiative in carrying it through; he also showed himself capable of more rational thinking. The twins were separated and placed in different groups in a kindergarten in order that objective assessments of the development of speech could be made.
