ABSTRACT

The function of the brain in the coding process is twofold: it selects the language units and arranges them in the appropriate order and provides a flow of operating instructions to be transmitted along neural pathways to the sets of muscles involved in speech. The most important feature of the code formed by a natural language, such as English, is that it is a hierarchical system, a system consisting of several levels and organized in such a way that units which function on one level combine to form the units on the level next above. The rhythm and intonation of his speech will again be determined both by his background and by the situation and will contain an emotional component which is due to his reaction to the subject of conversation and to the people and things around him at the moment.
