ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the core of activities which characterize the vegetable and flower gardening life in Sha Tin. Flower cultivation is a special feature of Sha Tin, although it may be found on a small scale in many places of the New Territories. The Sha Tin farmer can obtain credit from the market town shops, but only at a cost in that prices for things he will be obliged to buy from them will be slightly higher for him than for the ordinary customer. In Sha Tin it often occurs that some member of the farmer’s household is a wage earner in the city areas and commutes between the farmer’s cottage and the place of work. The majority of the vegetable dealers had also lost their godowns and was short of money for making loans to farmers and to extend other services.
