ABSTRACT

The dominant tendency in analytic philosophy in Australia is affectionately known as Australian materialism. Philosophy works within the bounds of science, and as a philosophical critique it is clear, crisp analysis that exposes the obstacles that prejudice, religious dogma and erroneous belief place in the way of achieving scientific truth. The extent that it does not protest the ideology of the naturalization of the social world, analytic philosophy as a part of scientific reason is ties up with, and integrated into, the technocratic regulation and control of freedom in a disordered society. The analytic Marxist philosophers would hold that most of is assertion, as little in the way of rigorous argument is offers by a tacit humanist philosophy linked into cultural studies. The expansion of instrumental reason in terms of an inter–human struggle over identity, meaning and value. The ragpickers resolves by claiming that the crisis of modernity involves the emancipatory ideals of the authoritative Enlightenment tradition not being realized.
