Introduction

Since the time of Czar Peter the Great, Russians have massively translated literary and other texts from other European nations. In fact, translation was one more “window” opened on the West, and many Russian writers and intellectuals considered translation an obvious part of their endeavor. As a result, translation and translators were, and are, highly respected, more so than in Western Europe or the Americas.
