ABSTRACT

Arrogance, like entitlement, appears to me to be a by-product of multiple determinants in a child’s development, a character trait arising from intermingling threads of nature and nurture woven together over time. Unlike character traits that are thought to have a strong genetic contribution ‒ shyness and boldness, musicality and tone-deafness, athleticism and weak or diminished gross motor co-ordination ‒ arrogance seems more likely to be a product of instinct and defense, compromise formations colored by identifications.
