ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on game design at a larger scale, the scale of communities. In the parlance of design, there are many different terms that people use to describe games. Big games, or field games, are games designed to be played by large numbers of people in a large-scale environment. An important thing to note about games is that they, like many community games, include a higher level of public performance. Location-based play formalizes the experience of a big game by tying play to a distinct location. Location-based play often employs some mix of the physical characteristics of specific locations with technology. One of the most interesting kinds of pervasive games is an alternate reality game. One way to encourage larger communities of play in real-world spaces is through augmented reality. Interstitial games are designed to turn ordinary, mundane spaces into playful experiences.
