ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on equilibrium calculations for reactions of metal ions with EDTA. The chapter begins with an overview of metal ion/EDTA reactions and a description of a scenario for plotting up to six titration curves on each figure. The chapter continues with a discussion of some background information, including discussions of reactions, formation constants, relationships between unchelated and chelated metal ion and EDTA concentrations, and effects on fractions of EDTA in the fully deprotonated and on shapes of titration curves. The chapter continues with discussions of conditional constants, effects of formation constants on titration curves, and equations for unchelated metal ion and ligand concentrations. After a brief discussion of ways to quantify degrees of completeness of metal ion/EDTA reactions, the discussion continues with descriptions of approximate calculations and procedures used to unify calculations for metal ions that do and don't form complexes with an auxiliary ligand such as ammonia. The chapter continues with descriptions of a charge balance equation, an iterative program to solve the equation, the use of color indicators to detect end points, and procedures to quantify end point errors.
