ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the changing governance modes of South African universities. It draws on university governance using a developmental lens is relevant as South Africa remains a developing country in many respects and its universities are considered an integral aspect of the aspirations to address issues pertaining to socio-economic development. Governance in South African universities is directly connected to the colonial past of the country. The legacy of these different institution types pervades even into modern-day South African higher education, where those universities that were traditionally ‘white’ continuing to be better resourced and capacitated. In the context of a decolonised university in South Africa, students will be one of the drivers of change. The Forum was meant to supplement university councils and senates that formed the core of university governance structures. The forum is meant to include all stakeholders from across the institution – support staff, unions, students, academics, university management and council members.
