ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the methodology that has guided some case studies on the adoption and diffusion of imported technology in Korea. The objective of this enquiry has been to learn as much as possible about the adoption and diffusion of industrial technologies imported into the Republic of Korea from more advanced economies. The difficulty in interpreting general measures arises because an activity may be terminated prematurely or a foreigner replaced too soon, with a subsequent loss in efficiency or increase in cost. The activities are carried out effectively, and the citizens of the importing country perform their duties adequately, the measures of speed of accomplishment and replacement of expatriates provide revealing measures of the degree of absorption. The description of underlying processes, when carried out with a high degree of abstraction, is called theorising. Theorising in economics also involves defining the variables and parameters with precision and relating them, one to another, in a logically correct manner.
